Magical History Tours
If you’re fascinated by history, love old buildings and the stories behind them, and prefer wide-open landscapes to congested cities, then our History Breaks could be just your cup of tea!
Book a break of two nights or more from March 1st, and we’ll include afternoon tea on your arrival, followed by an illustrated talk with local historian Penny Platts. Penny will point out the highlights of two circular car tours, which you can then follow at your own leisure during your stay, using the printed guides, which you will receive as part of this unique package.
Herefordshire has been described as one of the hidden jewels of English tourism. Unspoilt and still largely undiscovered, its beautiful landscapes are home to a wealth of historic buildings - from castles and churches to medieval black and white cottages and manor houses.
Our two tours each have a distinct theme: one focuses on the classic timber-framed buildings for which Herefordshire is renowned, and looks at the influence of the powerful Vaughan and Mortimer families. It takes in black-and-white villages including Eardisley, Kington, Pembridge, Eardisland and Wigmore, as well as the market town of Leominster.
The second tour focuses on the Celtic and Norman influences in the county’s religious buildings, and includes stops at Bredwardine – home to the Rev Francis Kilvert, author of Kilvert’s Diaries – Moccas, Kilpeck, Abbeydore, Peterchurch, and the world-renowned book town of Hay-on-Wye.
